Before we get into the finer details of the SIRTFood Diet, we should look at sirtuins which are central to this weight-loss diet plan.
There is a group of “house-keeping genes” known as Sirtuins that control the way our bodies handle fats and sugars. Periods, where we consume few calories, can trigger these sirtuins, which might explain why the 5:2 Intermittent fasting diet works.

Sirtuins are chemical compounds that are crucial for nurning fat, reducing appetite and boosting health.
SIRTFood Diet Food List
The authors of the book the Sirtfood Diet, Aidan Gogins and Glen Matten advise that eating foods rich in sirtuins (a group of seven proteins found in the body that has been shown to regulate a variety of functions, including metabolism, inflammation, and lifespan).
Because plants are stationary they’ve developed a highly sophisticated stress-response system and produce polyphenols that help them to adapt to the challenges of the environment. So what happens when we eat these plants?
When we eat these plants, their polyphenols activate our stress-response pathways (our sirtuin genes) imitating the effects of caloric restriction or exercise.
What can you Eat
Now, I don’t know about you, but I would be seriously hungry following the Sirtfood diet, However, it is easy to see how it can be restricted to only 1000 calories a day! The creators behind the diet claim that anyone following it will notice rapid weight loss alongside retaining muscle mass (apparently).
The lack of protein based foods would suggest it would be hard to retain muscle mass. There are books and recipes to follow and once the Sirtfood diet is ‘completed’, you are encouraged to incorporate some aspects into your normal diet. It sounds great for a very quick fix, but I imagine there are better plant based diets out there that are healthier to follow with long lasting positive effects.
