If you have an autoimmune disease you may remember your vitality as something you had before the onset of your condition. However, some simple Wahls Protocol recipes could hold the key to unlocking your lost vigour.
I have Multiple Sclerosis and following the Wahls Protocol has helped me control my MS symptoms.
Wahls Protocol Recipes
In a nutshell, the dietary regime of the Wahls Protocol concentrates on feeding your mitochondria to restore your energy and improve your wellness and health.
So, why should we be concerned about mitochondria? Mitochondria are cell organelles that exist in almost every cell in your body. Some cells, notably brain cells, contain more than one mitochondrion.
Mitochondria are the organelles known as the batteries of life. The two main functions of mitichondria are:
- Generate energy (heat)
- Mediate the cell growth (and death)
Many autoimmune disease display fatigue as a major symptom. If the mitochondria are not operating optimally, they are not producing energy efficiently.
Keeping your mitochondria happy is the way for you to enjoy the best health you can. You can keep your mitochondria happy by feeding them properly.
Wahls Veggie Protocol Q&A
If you find that following the Wahls Protocol is complicated of confusing take a look at the very useful summary Eileen has compiled.
As a former Wahls advocate, I am quite familiar with the teachings of Dr. Wahls.
Eileen has summarised the basic elements of the diet very well. She has also abridge the mitochondrial section far better that I ever managed to do.
Organ Meat Makeover
I just love the tagline for this article. Take the “awful” out of offal.
The wordplay is entertaining, albeit I disagree with the sentiment. I like offal and there is nothing about it that I find awful.
Offal is the organ meat from the animal. These may come from chicken, lamb, pork or beef beasts.
The organs we benerally eat are Liver, Kidney, Heart, Tongue and Brain. Another offal delicacy are Sweetbreads (pancreas and thymus).
My prefernce is always lamb liver and lamb kidneys.
Top Sulphur Rich Foods
One of the important minerals we must feed to our mitochondria is sulphur. Sulphur plays a key role in liver metabolism and has an important role on joint cartilage and the keratin of the skin and hair.
Sulphur also plays a key role in the defence systems against ageing. Some of the healthiest communities have the highest sulphur in their diet.
The amino acids of sulphur are very important in the maintenance and integrity of the cellular systems. They ate involved in the manufacture of glutathione. They help to neutralise free radicals.
Tracking Wahls Protocol Recipes Paleo Plus
Wahls Paleo Plus is the ketogenic version of the Wahls Protocol. Petra has developed a tracking system to help her monitor her progress on this keto plan.
She claims to have reached ketosis after a couple of days on the plan. She is now experimenting with coconut oil quantities to measure how well she maintains the ketosis state.
Snacking on AIP Bagels
Bagels are a special treat, especially sweet bagels. So finding and AIP recipe for bagels is, in itself, a treat. And, anything suitable for a quick treat is a rarity when you follow a strict Paelo diet.
Amanda has devised a method for using gelatin as a Paleo substitute for eggs in this tasty bagel recipe. She has tested many gelatin products and spoken, at length, to the companies behind them.
Brain Food Minerals
I still remember the shocking revelation that MS can cause brain shrinkage or brain atrophy. This brain shrinkage can cause irreversible neurological and cognitive impairments.
For this reason, I am very interested in brain food. I am convinced that diet plays a huge part in managing multiple sclerosis symptoms. So, brain food can help repair the damage MS has done to my brain.

There are 16 essential minerals needed by our bodies. They are divided into two categories micro and macro.
Forgo the supplements and pills. Supplements are usually manufactured and often contain forms of minerals that are hard for our bodies to ingest.
